Abu Dhabi to support Itochu’s expansion efforts in the emirate

Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and Japan’s Itochu Corporation have formed a strategic partnership to improve the group’s portfolio companies in Abu Dhabi.

The collaboration, announced at the Abu Dhabi Investment Forum in Tokyo on May 12, targets sectors such as advanced manufacturing, agritech, clean energy, healthcare, ICT, and logistics.

It aims to explore co-investment opportunities and joint ventures with Abu Dhabi investors to drive innovation and economic growth.

Itochu’s portfolio companies will receive support from the ADIO to establish and expand their operations in the emirate.

The initiative will also include knowledge exchange programs and capacity-building efforts to develop Emirati talent and strengthen local value chains.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic economic shifts: UAE’s successful diversification from oil-dependency

The ADIO-ITOCHU partnership reflects Abu Dhabi’s successful economic transformation from oil dependency to a diversified economy.

The UAE has reduced its reliance on oil exports to approximately one-third of its GDP through strategic diversification efforts, particularly in sectors like technology and renewable energy 1.

This partnership targets precisely those diversified high-growth sectors: advanced manufacturing, agri-tech, clean energy, healthcare, and information technology, all core to Abu Dhabi’s economic vision.

Abu Dhabi holds 9% of the world’s proven oil reserves but has strategically pivoted to position itself as a global business and finance center through initiatives like the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) free finance zone 2.

The success of this diversification is evidenced by the UAE’s non-oil exports increasing significantly between 1981 and 2009, with Dubai contributing approximately 82% of these exports 3.

This partnership demonstrates how Abu Dhabi continues leveraging strategic international relationships to accelerate its transition toward a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy.

2️⃣ Abu Dhabi’s pattern of strategic Asian economic partnerships

The ITOCHU agreement follows Abu Dhabi’s established pattern of forming strategic economic partnerships with Asian economic powers.
