Abu Dhabi, Didi partner on smart mobility projects
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office has partnered with Didi Autonomous Driving, a subsidiary of China-based Didi Global, to support smart mobility projects in the Middle East.
Didi Autonomous Driving will join Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster, a government-led initiative for advanced transport technologies.
Both parties said they will work on autonomous driving technology, AI talent development, and ecosystem building in Abu Dhabi, with plans to expand across the region.
The SAVI cluster aims to boost Abu Dhabi’s position in autonomous vehicle development.
Officials from both organizations described the collaboration as significant for local smart mobility efforts, but did not disclose specific timelines or project details.
The Abu Dhabi government projects that the SAVI cluster could add AED44 billion to the emirate’s GDP and create up to 40,000 jobs by 2045.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Abu Dhabi’s autonomous vehicle rules support fast commercial deployment
- The Integrated Transport Centre, the emirate’s transport regulator, granted one of the first permits for a fully autonomous commercial service to Apollo Go and AutoGo after months of testing since a March announcement 1.
- The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council is a cross-government body that manages regulation, infrastructure and security. It judges commercial viability and enables real-world trials that span modes, placing Abu Dhabi among the first cities with an integrated autonomous rulebook 2.
- Autologix is an autonomous logistics company and Emirates Post is the UAE’s national postal service 2. They will deploy Level 4 cargo vehicles with no driver within a defined area that are built without a cab or steering wheel 2. Delivery tie-ups include Talabat, Noon and Aramex 2.
Suppliers tap ADIO or SAVI for funding and partnerships
- Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) offers streamlined licensing and Musataha agreements (long-term land rights contracts) for long-term land tenure. It also enables public-private partnerships and has secured USD 735 million through 111 Musataha contracts 3.
- The Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster links government entities, investors and global tech firms 4. Suppliers get direct access to commercial deployment deals instead of isolated test zones 4.
- ADIO’s cluster model backs firms across the autonomous vehicle value chain 5. Focus areas include sensor fusion and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication 5. Other priorities cover solid-state batteries, AI-enhanced predictive maintenance and 5G connectivity 5.
