A16z-backed studio Promise teams up with Google on AI

Promise, a generative AI studio, has announced a partnership with Google to integrate its AI technologies into the company’s production pipeline and workflow software, Muse.

This collaboration will also include researchers from Google’s AI unit, DeepMind.

The startup, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, has secured additional investment from Google’s AI Futures Fund, Crossbeam Venture Partners, and North Road Company, led by former News Corp President Peter Chernin.

Promise aims to use generative AI tools to help Hollywood studios reduce production costs and speed up content creation.

Founded by George Strompolos, Jamie Byrne, and Dave Clark, the company is working with industry stakeholders to develop a multi-year content slate.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic AI-entertainment partnerships accelerate amid industry growth

Promise’s partnership with Google continues a pattern of strategic collaborations between AI companies and entertainment players that has been developing since at least 2019.

This deal emerges as the generative AI market in media and entertainment is projected to grow from $1.97 billion in 2024 to $2.53 billion in 2025, representing a 28.1% annual growth rate 1.

The longer-term market potential is even more substantial, with projections reaching $11.57 billion by 2033, reflecting how these partnerships are positioning for a fundamental transformation of entertainment production 2.

Early adoption is already widespread, with 64% of media executives reporting they’ve implemented generative AI in their production processes, and 72% claiming positive returns on these investments 2.

Promise’s strategic positioning combines Hollywood connections through North Road Company (led by former News Corp president Peter Chernin) with tech industry expertise (its founders include former YouTube and Fullscreen executives).

2️⃣ Hollywood embraces AI tools while maintaining creative control

Promise’s focus on integrating Google’s AI into its production pipeline reflects the entertainment industry’s cautious approach to AI adoption, embracing efficiency while preserving human creativity.

Despite the rapid growth of AI in entertainment, Deloitte forecasts that Hollywood studios will allocate less than 3% of production budgets directly to generative AI tools by 2025, demonstrating a measured approach to creative applications 3.
