A16z leads $16m for Swedish AI startup Pit

Swedish AI startup Pit has raised US$16 million in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz and joined by Lakestar, and executives from major AI and tech firms.

The round also included Sweden’s Stena and Lundin families.

Pit said it already has pilot projects with Voi, Tre, Stena Recycling, and Kry.

The funding will support Pit’s AI tools for fragmented workflows across industries.

Its backing adds to a string of bets on Swedish startups after it led a pre-seed round for Stockholm-based Dentio earlier this year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pit wants to sidestep the usual build-or-buy choice

  • The company calls its offer an “AI product team as a service,” and frames it as more than selling ready-made software 1.
  • It aims to spare customers from picking between rigid software-as-a-service products and expensive custom builds 2.
  • The founders are turning their in-house playbook into a product after building tailored AI systems at Voi, an electric scooter and bike operator, and Klarna, the Swedish payments company, to fix operational slowdowns 2.
  • Rather than using low-code tools that can pile up technical debt, Pit builds maintainable software on governed cloud infrastructure with ISO 27001, an information security certification standard, plus EU-hosted isolated environments 2.

This software approach could pressure software as a service (SaaS) incumbents

  • Pit goes after the one-size-fits-all software-as-a-service model, where companies often pay for features they never use and reshape workflows to fit the product 2.
  • Businesses have spent more than US$1 trillion on digital transformation, yet many core tasks still rely on manual workarounds because generic tools miss what business users need day to day 3.
  • If the model works, some IT budgets could shift away from large software vendors toward AI-built systems that work with a company’s existing technology stack 2.
  • The AI coding market could grow fivefold to about US$25 billion by 2030, with the bigger opening likely going to firms that handle enterprise rollout and governance, not only code generation 4.
