A16z leads $15m series A for AI interview tool Cluely
Cluely, a startup developing tools for job interviews, exams, and sales calls, has raised US$15 million in a series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
The announcement was made via a video posted on X on June 20.
Two sources estimate Cluely’s post-money valuation at around US$120 million, though Andreessen Horowitz has not confirmed this.
CEO Roy Lee did not respond to requests for comment.
The funding comes just two months after a US$5.3 million seed round co-led by Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures.
Cluely was co-founded this year by Roy Lee and Neel Shanmugam, who were previously suspended from Columbia University for building “Interview Coder.”
Lee has claimed on social media that Cluely is already profitable.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Controversy as a calculated marketing strategy
Cluely’s provocative marketing approach follows a recognizable pattern of startups leveraging controversy to rapidly build brand awareness, similar to what we’ve seen with other tech companies.
This strategy has historical precedents in marketing, as seen with brands like Dove and Pepsi, whose controversial ads generated massive attention despite backlash.
In Pepsi’s case, their 2017 Kendall Jenner ad was criticized for trivializing social justice movements and was withdrawn within 24 hours of release, yet generated enormous free media coverage1.
Roy Lee’s social media presence and controversial videos represent a deliberate choice to court attention through provocation, which has proven effective in rapidly increasing Cluely’s visibility.
This approach carries significant risks alongside potential rewards, as demonstrated by the H&M racial insensitivity scandal in 2018, which damaged brand reputation despite initially capturing widespread attention1.
2️⃣ VC funding patterns reflect shifting ethical boundaries in tech
