A16z launches $1.1b fund for AI hardware, infrastructure

Andreessen Horowitz, a US venture capital firm, has launched a US$1.1 billion Machine Age fund aimed at AI hardware and infrastructure, expanding beyond its usual focus on software scaling.

The fund will invest in chips, memory, data centers, robots, interconnects, edge devices, and the cooling, materials, electrical capacity, and real estate needed to support AI systems.

In a post on its website, the firm said AI would require faster and more efficient systems, cheaper and higher-bandwidth memory, and more scalable interconnects to support growing computing demand.

The move comes as venture capital turns more toward AI hardware and related infrastructure.

It also aligns with broader concerns that AI-driven data centers are straining electricity grids, while power availability and grid connections are slowing the buildout of new data center capacity.
