A16z, Google exec back AI startup Yupp’s $33m seed funding

AI startup Yupp has raised US$33 million in a seed funding round led by a16z crypto, the cryptocurrency arm of Andreessen Horowitz.

The round included over 45 investors, such as Google chief scientist Jeff Dean, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, Cred CEO Kunal Shah, and Coinbase Ventures.

Yupp was co-founded in June 2024 by Pankaj Gupta and Gilad Mishne, who have backgrounds at Coinbase, Google, and top research institutions.

Yupp’s platform allows users to compare responses from various AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Users earn rewards through blockchain-based incentives like Base and Solana, or through Stripe and PayPal.

The platform gathers user feedback to improve model performance and features a public leaderboard called the “Yupp VIBE Score.”

It aims to offer free access to premium AI tools using this feedback, while keeping prompts private unless users choose to share them.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Yupp enters a rapidly expanding LLM evaluation marketplace

Yupp’s entry comes amid growing recognition that systematic AI model evaluation is critical as organizations deploy LLMs at scale, with specialized evaluation tools emerging as their own market segment.

The platform faces established competitors in this space, including Confident AI, Arize AI, MLFlow, and Ragas, which have already built substantial user bases for evaluating model performance and reliability 1.

LLM evaluation has evolved from academic benchmarks to include real-world user feedback systems, reflecting industry recognition that theoretical metrics alone cannot predict real-world performance across diverse use cases.

By introducing crypto-based incentives, Yupp is attempting to differentiate in a crowded field where competitors are primarily focused on metrics quality, dataset quality, and technical user experience rather than payment mechanisms 1.

This approach aligns with predictions that the market for AI model comparison and evaluation tools will grow significantly as companies seek more sophisticated methods to assess model performance before deployment 2.

2️⃣ Crypto incentives for AI feedback represent a growing economic experiment

Yupp’s implementation of crypto-based rewards for user feedback follows broader explorations of blockchain-enabled compensation models, which typically take form as either value-based token bonuses or internal utility tokens 3.
