A16z backs AI patent startup Stilta in $10m round

Stilta said it raised US$10.5 million in a seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The Stockholm-based startup builds AI software engineered for patent workflows, focusing on automated data research and analysis in intellectual property disputes.

It allows users to input a patent number alongside related material, and the software automatically checks related patents and pulls filing and court histories.

Investors also include Y Combinator, alongside angel operators from OpenAI and legal tech firms Legora and Lovable. The company was co-founded by Oskar Block, Tobias Estreen, Petrus Werner, and Oscar Adamsson.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Stilta’s client list shows a fast push into the market

  • The Swedish startup is five months old and already works with Roche, the Swiss pharmaceuticals company, Alfa Laval, the Swedish industrial equipment maker, and Maersk, the Danish shipping and logistics group 1.
  • It has also signed three of the world’s five largest intellectual property law firms as customers or in active trials 1.
  • The company won this business with AI agents that handle complex analysis across 180 million patents and 250 million scientific publications 1.
  • In one demo, the system found 868 prior art references for one patent in about 30 minutes 1. Prior art includes earlier publications or patents that could affect whether a patent is valid 1.

AI could turn patent portfolios into revenue

  • Stilta is in a race to automate patent analysis. Rivals include Patlytics and Solve Intelligence, which both raised US$40 million series B rounds. Patlytics and Solve’s Charts product are the closest competitors, said Oskar Block, CEO of Stilta 1.
  • Lower analysis costs let companies unlock value in patents they did not enforce or license and often did not study because the work was too expensive, said Oskar Block, CEO of Stilta 2.
  • Faster infringement reviews and freedom-to-operate analysis, an assessment of whether a product can be sold without violating someone else’s patent rights, can move intellectual property from a defensive expense toward licensing revenue 3.
  • The question now is whether companies with large patent portfolios are ready for the options that open up when the analytical bottleneck disappears, said Oskar Block, CEO of Stilta 2.
