A16z-backed AI firm 11x’s CEO steps down

Hasan Sukkar, founder of AI startup 11x, has stepped down as CEO. Chief technology officer Prabhav Jain will take over the role effective immediately.

Sukkar will transition to non-executive chairman, focusing on strategic direction and industry relationships.

“I love building from the ground up,” he shared in a LinkedIn post. “Sometimes, loving your company means knowing when to pass the CEO baton for the next leg of the race.”

11x has raised over US$70 million from investors such as Benchmark and Andreessen Horowitz.

The leadership change follows reports of challenges at 11x. These include customer retention issues and allegations of displaying logos of inactive clients on its website.

One company has reportedly considered legal action. Employees have also described the work environment as demanding.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The founder transition gap is a well-documented inflection point

Sukkar’s departure reflects a common pattern among startup founders who excel at early-stage building but struggle with scaling operations.

This transition challenge is well-documented, with research showing founders often face a “Product CEO Paradox” where their hands-on approach that was critical early on becomes a bottleneck during scaling phases 1.

Sukkar’s own statement that he “loves building from the ground up” and that it’s “in his bones” reflects research findings that many founders recognize their strengths lie in creation rather than operational scaling.

The shift from a hands-on to a delegative leadership style is one of the most difficult transitions, requiring CEOs to move from direct involvement to empowering specialized managers with clear accountability frameworks 2.

His move to a non-executive chairman role focused on “strategic direction, product vision, and industry relationships” aligns with research suggesting founders can remain valuable by maintaining their vision role while delegating day-to-day operations.

2️⃣ CEO transitions often follow product-market fit challenges

11x’s leadership change comes after reported issues with customer misrepresentation and retention problems, highlighting how execution challenges often trigger leadership adjustments.
