Seven-Eleven Japan Co. will begin testing a self-driving truck for long-haul product deliveries, becoming the first in Japan’s convenience store and supermarket sector to do so.

The retailer is partnering with T2 Inc., an autonomous driving technology developer, and Mitsui & Co. Retail Group Ltd.

The trial will run three times by April 2026, using sections of the Tomei and Meishin expressways between Niiza in Saitama Prefecture and Amagasaki in Hyogo Prefecture.

A T2 Inc. self-driving truck will carry Seven-Eleven private-label goods, such as umbrellas, cup miso soup, and tissues, between logistics centers.

The initiative aims to address shortages in truck drivers and maintain stable product supplies.
