Volkswagen is set to invest US$700 million in Chinese firm Xpeng to co-develop electric vehicles and combat decreasing sales in China.

The deal will see Volkswagen acquire a 4.99% stake in Xpeng and a seat on the firm’s board, as well as further collaborations with VW’s long-time partner, SAIC Motor Corp.
