X, formerly called Twitter, has begun testing a US$1 annual fee for new, unverified accounts in the Philippines and New Zealand.

This move is not meant to drive profit, but to reduce spam and bot activity. This fee allows new users to engage with posts, but it doesn’t affect existing users.
