In 50 Words: Malaysia targets 5 unicorns by 2025
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim last week announced a slew of tweaks to the country’s economic development policy, including changes to support the tech and startup sectors.
These include allocating 266 million ringgit (US$57 million) in grants for unicorns and other high-potential startups. Only 63.9 million ringgit (US$13.6 million) has been used to date.
The prime minister also highlighted the importance of state financial institutions, such as sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional, investing in startups and the need to setup incubators across the country, especially in rural and suburban areas.
Malaysia, Anwar added, aims to nurture five unicorns by 2025.
