The European Commission is considering higher tariffs on cheaper imports of Chinese electric vehicles, including those from non-Chinese brands that are manufactured in China, such as Tesla and BMW.

There is an ongoing investigation into the uptake of Chinese EVs in Europe amid weakened consumer demand in China and fierce competition from Tesla there.

The increased tariffs could also incite a trade dispute with China.
