In 50 Words: ASEAN to adopt more lenient AI regulation, prioritizing innovation
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is adopting a lenient approach to AI regulation, unlike the stringent framework of the EU, according to sources in a Reuters report.
ASEAN’s “guide to AI ethics and governance” will be voluntary, mindful of cultural differences, and avoid prescribing risk categories, the sources said. This will offer a more business-friendly approach that allows for innovation and limits the burden of compliance.
The rules are still under review, and the process is scheduled to be completed by January 2024.
