Alibaba, Tencent, and Xiaomi are among the backers in a US$300 million funding round for Baichuan, a Chinese AI startup developing chat services comparable to ChatGPT.

Baichuan, which recently gained government approval for public deployment, has created four open-source large language models and has two proprietary platforms in the pipeline.
