23andMe co-founder to reacquire company for $305m

Anne Wojcicki, co-founder and former CEO of 23andMe, will reacquire the genetic testing company for US$305 million through her nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute.

The acquisition includes 23andMe’s core assets: its Personal Genome Service, Research Services, and telehealth subsidiary Lemonaid Health.

The deal follows the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in March 2025.

Last month, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals offered US$256 million for the majority of 23andMe’s assets.

Wojcicki submitted a higher bid through TTAM, leading to a reopened auction.

Founded in 2006, 23andMe became known for its at-home DNA kits and went public in 2021, reaching a US$6 billion peak valuation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The exceptional value of genetic data is driving acquisition interest

The $305 million purchase price for 23andMe illustrates the significant value placed on genetic data collections, even for a company in bankruptcy.

This genetic database, containing information from approximately 15 million customers, represents one of the largest private collections of human DNA information in the world 1.

The competitive bidding between Regeneron and Wojcicki’s nonprofit mirrors a previous partnership where GlaxoSmithKline invested $300 million in 23andMe specifically to access its genetic database for drug development in 2018 2.

This trend of pharmaceutical interest in consumer genetic data demonstrates how valuable these databases have become for medical research and drug discovery, with the direct-to-consumer genetic testing market projected to grow from $345 million in 2024 to $608 million by 2030 3.

The genetic information collected through consumer testing has evolved from being merely a consumer service to becoming a strategic asset for pharmaceutical research, explaining why multiple bidders competed intensely for 23andMe’s assets despite its financial troubles.

2️⃣ Genetic privacy concerns have evolved from theoretical to practical

The 23andMe bankruptcy and sale represents a pivotal moment in genetic privacy, as concerns about data protection have shifted from hypothetical to immediate legal issues.
