Some interesting news around the world that gave me some food for thought:
1. Podcast numbers cut through hype, dated 10 April 2006, BBC News, by Jonathan Fildes.
“People downloading to podcasts are still in a minority, despite the hype surrounding them, research suggests.
The number of US households listening to podcasts will increase to just 12 million by 2010, a Forrester Research report has found.”
It just occurred to me that there are restrictions on podcasting in Singapore due to the elections, but these numbers seem to indicate the audience will be pretty small. Actually, it might be interesting to see how much podcasting is really done in Singapore.
2. No need to up bandwidth to speed up broadband, Dr Tham Chen Khong, Straits Times, Forum page.
“The article cited an expert who attributed the cause to network congestion arising from insufficient bandwidth. The expert was also quoted as saying that congestion does not affect activities like surfing the Internet or movie downloads, and he went on to recommend that StarHub buys more hardware and provides more bandwidth…….
It is important that cost-effective methods are considered first before rushing into more expensive and possibly ‘overkill’ solutions that vendors like to recommend.”
I like the last line because I think that we should look at existing solutions before going for a shopping spree on expensive technologies to solve our problems. As usual, I have to say that software is important.
