In brief: Nets available outside Singapore for the first time with UnionPay partnership

Singapore consumers can now use the NetsPay app to make e-payments when they travel overseas, thanks to a new partnership between Singapore’s leading payments solutions provider Nets and global payment network UnionPay.

The enhanced NetsPay app comes with a new wallet feature that enables consumers to scan and pay for purchases at over 7.5 million UnionPay QR code merchants globally.

Singaporeans will also be able to make contactless payments via smartphones equipped with near-field communication technology at close to 12 million UnionPay QuickPass contactless acceptance points worldwide – no need to use cash in the local currency.

In addition to overseas payments, the updated app allows users to send and receive money from other NetsPay wallets by scanning a QR code or inputting another user’s mobile number. Taking a leaf out of WeChat’s playbook, NetsPay will also enable users to gift e-angpao (red envelopes) for Spring Festival and other special occasions.

The tie-up with China’s UnionPay marks the first time that Nets services will be available outside of Singapore.
