MyRepublic wants to give you 2GB for S$8/month if it becomes Singapore’s 4th telco

Singaporean telco startup MyRepublic just announced it’s opening up registration of interest for proposed mobile plans, putting forth some aggressive pricing.

It’s offering a 2GB plan for S$8 (US$5.80) per month – that would probably make it the cheapest mobile data plan available in Singapore, although it’s not mentioned if that includes any voice or SMS. It’s also debuting what looks to be the first unlimited mobile data plan in the country, at US$58 per month.

MyRepublic is looking to get user feedback and interest in those plans through this website, in case it succeeds in becoming Singapore’s fourth telco after the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) opened up bids for telecommunications companies earlier this year. It’s aiming to raise US$178 million from investors by April 2016 for that purpose.

The plans for MyRepublic’s current and new broadband customers are even more attractive, with S$6 (US$4.3) per month for the 2GB plan and US$43 per month for the unlimited data plan.

Broadband customers who’ve signed up with the company by September 30, 2015, will get an unlimited data plan for free for 12 months, as MyRepublic had promised back in August 2015.

MyRepublic says that these proposed plans will “provide some insight into the different approach [we] look to take should we become successful in our upcoming mobility bid.”

While the prices are enticing, a straight comparison with the competition isn’t easy, as other telcos offer mobile plans that combine data, voice, SMS, and value-added services like caller ID and free incoming calls.

Out of the three current telcos in Singapore, Singtel is the only one offering a 2GB mobile data plan, along with 200 minutes of outgoing calls and 1,000 SMS for US$31 per month.

For the same price, Starhub offers 150 minutes of outgoing calls, 1,000 SMS, and 3GB of mobile data. For US$30 per month, M1 offers 200 minutes of outgoing calls, 1,000 SMS, and 3GB of mobile data.

MyRepublic’s proposed plans won’t include a phone, caller ID, or roaming. These will be available via add-ons, though prices for these have not been specified.

MyRepublic raised US$16 million in funding from investors including Brunei telco DST Communications in September 2015.
