Even though the holiday is not here yet, many people have already started the journey back to their hometowns (pulang kampung or mudik). For those who want to travel, they can now monitor the road situation via the Internet in order to avoid traffic jams.
The service is provided by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation through its website. Users can find the traffic conditions, see CCTV monitoring, digital maps, a list of service stations, and the nearest police stations.
There are at least 40 CCTV cameras available at critical traffic network points. Visitors can choose which area they want to monitor so they can decide the best traveling route for the journey. Huge traffic jams usually happen during mudik’s peak time, so a service like this one is invaluable.
Unfortunately the service has no mobile site, so users will need to use a PC to access it, which is not convenient while on the road. What’s the solution? Just follow the @infomudikllaj Twitter account, or ‘like’ the Rttmc Hubdat Facebook page to monitor the traffic situation on your phone.
This is a great initiative from the government, responding to a public need for real-time information as more Indonesians turn to the internet. It also complements similar services such as @pulkam on Twitter and an Android app to guide visitors in Yogya.
With any luck, everyone’s journey back to their hometowns will be more convenient this year, thanks to these new services.
