WeChat is close to a billion users

WeChat, China’s favorite messaging app, now has 963 million people actively using it, the company revealed today. That figure for monthly active users is up from 806 million this time last year.

It might pass the billion-user milestone at the time of parent company Tencent’s next earnings report. Both Facebook Messenger (blocked in China) and WhatsApp (partially accessible) have both already surpassed that mark.

WeChat has recently been trying to make itself even more ubiquitous, adding a search engine for the web in May. That followed its January rollout of instant apps that don’t need downloading.

The app is used primarily in mainland China, with some chatters in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
