Mobile Behaviors Across Japan, United States and Europe

Mobile phone with coins and dollar bank notesEvery country’s mobile behavior varies and that explains why mobile phone makers are altering phones specifications to suit each region’s need. Often, we see the same phone model but with slightly different functions. For example, Taiwan and Singapore each has a customized set of keypads to text in Chinese characters. This is because Mandarin is taught differently.

Now, to the big boys. comScore compiled an interesting graph comparing mobile behaviors across Japan, U.S and Europe. I understand that Japanese are mobile phone savvy but the stats gave me a surprise. A relatively huge proportion of people actually watched TV/video through their phones.

So, I did a little research and found that 1seg, a mobile terrestrial digital audio/video and data broadcasting service company seems well received in Japan. According to Wikipedia, JEITA‘s monthly shipping stats reflected 4.8 million mobile phones sold in Japan in November 2007. Of these, approximately 3 million phones (63.5%) can receive 1seg broadcasts. And that explains.

Social-networking remains to be Americans’ favorite mobile activity since both Twitter and Facebook origin from the United States. Europe, on the other hand, seems to focus more on the functionalities like mp3 and camera. More statistic below.
