Microsoft emissions rose 27% as AI buildout grew
Microsoft said its greenhouse gas emissions rose 27% to 21.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, as its AI infrastructure expansion outpaced decarbonization efforts.
Its emissions intensity rose to 75.0 metric tons per US$1 million of revenue from 68.1.
Scope 2 market-based emissions, which are tied to purchased electricity, jumped to 2.7 million metric tons from 259,090 after Microsoft said it stopped buying spot energy attribute certificates and carbon removal credits in February 2025.
Water use increased 22% to 8,170 megaliters.
That moved Microsoft further from goals it has committed to reach by 2030 to be carbon negative and replenish more water than it consumes.
Microsoft said it is adding carbon-free electricity capacity in the power grids where it operates.
