🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Japan backs Micron’s ¥1.5 trillion bet, with output slated for 2027
- Up to ¥536 billion (USD 3.63 billion) in subsidies will cover about 36% of the Hiroshima fab budget in western Japan 1.
- The plant will make next-generation 1-gamma DRAM and High Bandwidth Memory using EUV lithography, an advanced chipmaking technique, with mass output planned in 2027 1.
- Tokyo also funded Micron in 2022 and 2023, which keeps up a long-run push to draw semiconductor investment 1.
- The package matches support for TSMC’s (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) Kumamoto fabs, which got ¥476 billion for the first site 1.
Japanese equipment and materials suppliers can win orders from the new fabrication plant (fab)
- The ¥1.5 trillion spend will go to equipment makers, materials vendors, and builders working on the Hiroshima site 1.
- B2B sellers can target ROHM Co. Ltd. (a power and analog semiconductor maker) and Kioxia Corporation (a NAND flash memory manufacturer), two memory sector companies in Japan 2.
- Investors can look at Japanese tool makers that gain from the broader ¥5 trillion plan by Sony, Mitsubishi Electric, and ROHM through 2029 1.
- EUV focus opens doors for suppliers of advanced materials and precision parts used in leading edge processes 1.
