Micron to raise Taiwan headcount to 15,000 by 2026
Micron Technology Taiwan Chair Donghui Lu said it plans to lift its Taiwan headcount to 15,000 by the end of 2026 as it unveiled a newly acquired plant in Tongluo, Miaoli County.
Lu said about 1,000 of the new roles will be based at the facility.
Lu said Micron’s cumulative investment in Taiwan reached NT$1.4 trillion (US$43.9 billion) as of January 2026, and that the company will keep building DRAM manufacturing and packaging capacity with high-bandwidth memory as a focus.
Premier Cho Jung-tai said Taiwan is Micron’s largest manufacturing base globally and cited government support for Micron’s high-efficiency memory and HBM technology in 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The new plant is part of a larger US$1.8 billion deal with a technology partnership
- Micron acquired a new facility from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) for US$1.8 billion under an acquisition agreement announced in January 2026 1.
- The deal also creates a technology partnership focused on high-bandwidth memory (HBM), post-wafer-finish (PWF) foundry services (a manufacturing service that completes the final steps after chips are made on a wafer), and advanced memory process technologies 2.
- Micron will provide technical assistance so PSMC can build niche DRAM chip processes at its Hsinchu facility 3.
- Micron plans a second facility of similar size at the same site, with construction set to start by the end of fiscal 2026 1.
Micron’s AI bet adds pressure across the memory market
- The premier promised better water supply after Taiwan cut water to science parks that house Micron and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) during its worst drought in more than 50 years 4.
- Micron said demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is squeezing output for standard memory, which adds to a broader memory shortage 5.
- Micron forecast standard memory prices could rise by up to 50% 5.
- Taiwan is framing the investment as a national example of Taiwan-US strategic cooperation in the AI era 6.
