Meta notifies Singapore staff in global 8,000-role layoffs
Meta began notifying staff in Singapore on May 20 of a global layoff affecting about 8,000 roles, as it restructures to cut costs and shift more resources to AI.
Workers in multiple countries were set to receive notices in their local time zones, and staff were told to work from home during the process.
A May 18 memo said about 7,000 employees were moved to new AI teams.
Engineering and product teams would be hit hardest.
Meta had just under 80,000 employees at end-March, and it plans more than US$100 billion in AI capital spending in 2026 despite employee complaints and investor concern over returns.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Meta’s AI spending stands apart, even among tech giants
- Investors are cautious because Meta does not have the cloud businesses that help Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon turn big AI infrastructure spending into revenue more directly 1.
- That difference has made Meta’s push look riskier. Meta shares fell 7% after it raised its capital spending outlook, while Alphabet rose 7% after increasing its own capital expenditure (capex) guidance 1.
- MoffettNathanson estimated Meta’s capex-to-revenue ratio will reach 47% next year. Microsoft is at 29%, Alphabet at 26%, and Amazon at 16% 2.
- Zuckerberg added to the concern when he said, “I don’t think we have a very precise plan for exactly how each product is going to scale or anything like that,” after questions about how the spending would pay off 3.
AI is changing Meta’s products and workforce
- Meta moved about 7,000 employees to new AI teams, which signals a broad shift in staffing around AI priorities rather than another round of cuts 4.
- The strategy is already feeding through to the business, with stronger engagement and revenue growth in products including Instagram Reels 4.
- Zuckerberg described a lasting change in product work. AI now lets “one or two people” build something in a week that “would have previously taken dozens of people months” 3.
