Meet GLEN, a game engine from Malaysia’s Pickled Brains

Video game developers have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to making their own games. From easy to use options such as Gamemaker to complex, full blown engines such as Unreal, the options are endless. Amidst all these choices is Pickled Brains, a Malaysia-based company that’s created a slick looking engine called GLEN. We spoke to the company to find out what makes GLEN worth looking into for developers.

Comparably cool

Pickled Brains’ engine has a few advantages over most independent studios’ current options. It uses managed DirectX for graphics rendering along with integrated Nvidia GPU dedicated PhysX. The company also has its own tool for PhysX asset creation. For the not-so tech-savvy, all of this allows developers to create high quality games comparable to other commercial engines. Nonetheless, the company is also aware that it’s in a different league compared to Unity and Unreal that are well developed and mature. As for GLEN it’s still raw and it is only in the version 1.0a.

It’s on Microsoft platforms…for now

Don’t rush out hoping your latest Android and iOS game would work on it though. Right now it only supports Microsoft platforms. These include the Xbox 360, Windows Phone, and PC. However the company says that it won’t be restricted to these three platforms.

No doubt in the future we’ll roll out cross- platform solutions on GLEN.

It’s local and it wants you

That is of course, if you’re a developer in Malaysia or Singapore. Right now, these are the two regions Pickled Brains is targeting with GLEN.
