Mark Cuban on AI scale: why Apple wins while data centers bleed

Executives across the business world are blindly pouring millions into AI. They expect the software will magically print money.

However, entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban warns that stuffing technology into outdated corporate habits is a huge waste of cash that only speeds up a company’s burn rate.

To actually see a return on their investment, he argues that companies must completely tear down and rebuild how they work from the ground up.

Complete changes work better than small updates

Leaders often buy software hoping for quick profits while leaving their core routines untouched. Because workers naturally resist changing how they do their jobs, teams end up protecting their old systems from faster, automated programs.

“We hear stories about huge public companies that spend a lot of money to try to implement AI, and it doesn’t get them a return on investment,” Cuban notes. “To take advantage of AI, you have to reformulate your business completely to build it on AI.”

Executing this shift requires bold leaders who are willing to prioritize complete redesigns over fast profits.

Cuban adds, “The biggest challenge is for the CEO to decide we’re going to have to blow up a lot of what we do to recreate our company, because if we don’t, somebody else will. Over the next three years, there’s going to be two types of companies: those who are great at AI and those who went out of business.”

Smart software targets hidden delays

Once a leader decides to rebuild, the next question is where to begin. Instead of trying to change core products immediately, the best starting point is aiming AI directly at the boring paperwork that drains employee time.

Cuban explains that an AI agent “can do all the tedious work that you don’t want to do and all the stuff that you hope to get to at some point but you just don’t have the time to get to… This agent’s going to work 24/7.”

Solving specific delays brings huge returns. Cuban highlights Rebel Cheese, a local business that wrote a simple program to compare box sizes with price lists and invoices.

When mistakes happen, the AI automatically creates a credit request. “[Rebel Cheese is] saving US$50,000 a month,” Cuban says. “And it’s all automated.”
