VC arm of Paul Allen’s Vulcan leads seed round of Vietnamese edtech firm

Marathon, a Vietnam-based edtech startup, has raised an undisclosed amount in a seed funding round led by Vulcan Capital, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. The fundraise also saw participation from Forge Ventures, DSG Consumer Partners, and Goodwater Capital.

Founded last year, Marathon offers live online tutoring sessions for K-12 students. It currently has hundreds of individual tutors, including native teachers for English language classes.

The company said it saw a 30% growth in monthly users during its first year of operations.

The startup was established by Duc Pham, former investment executive at TPG Capital, along with Tran Viet Tung, former Vietnam country head for Klook. In August last year, Marathon raised US$1.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Forge Ventures.

The edtech firm plans to use the fresh funding for product development and expansion purposes. It aims to expand its online-to-offline experience centers beyond Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
