This horror game has been Lurking in the shadows. You should try it.

stifled game

The story’s been told a dozen times. A group of Digipen students made one of the region’s most innovative horror games in Lurking and could not take it further because the IP rights belonged to their school.

Undaunted, they went on to form a studio, Gattai Games, and to work on a spiritual successor to Lurking. Revealed to the world back in December last year via a gif, codename Project Echo is now called Stifled, and has a full gameplay demo which will be showcased at GDC Play.

I tried this demo last week. What you saw in the gif we shared here works to great effect. The wireframe world will toggle between that and a fully-textured realm in the demo, and it can be truly freaky at times. At present, however, this feature is limited to just giving you jump scares.

Like the original Lurking game, the upcoming iteration sees you all alone in that wireframe world, doused in darkness and forced to navigate by echolocation. The microphone comes into play yet again to pick up on your voice, and the sense of isolation is even greater in this expanded world.

AI has also been greatly improved on, and it won’t be easy sneaking past enemies any more. If you’ve played stealth games before, it’s time to put all of your best tricks into practice to stay alive.

If you make it to the end of Gattai Games’ demo at GDC Play, you’ll be presented with the game’s proper and final title – Stifled – which represents exactly what you will be doing when you play the full version: covering your mouth so they can’t hear you scream.

Gattai Games is located at the Singapore Game Box booth at 2116. The studio is based in the Games Solution Centre in Singapore.
