HashKey secures $100m, claims unicorn status

HashKey Group, a Hong Kong-based financial services firm focused on digital assets, has secured nearly US$100 million in a series A funding round from undisclosed investors.

The amount was raised at a pre-money valuation of US$1.2 billion, according to the company, which indicates its unicorn status. In a statement, the firm said it will use the fresh capital to diversify its products for its business in Hong Kong as well as globally.

Last year, the group’s crypto trading arm, HashKey Exchange, became the first licensed exchange to offer retail and professional services in Hong Kong. It obtained Type 1 and Type 7 licenses – which are given to companies dealing with securities and automated trading services, respectively – from Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission in August 2023.

The group said that HashKey Exchange recorded 155,000 registered users within the first four months after its launch, with a daily average trading volume of US$630 million in the past month. It has partnered with over 10 brokerage firms and six publicly listed companies.

Founded in 2018, HashKey Group also has operational offices in Singapore and Tokyo. In addition to its virtual asset exchange, it runs several other businesses, including asset management firm HashKey Capital.
