Hi readers,
Every journalist loves the thrill of “chasing a big story.” It takes you from being a fly on the wall to being in the driver’s seat. As your words unfold new developments, it almost feels like you’re making history.
Real life, of course, isn’t so romantic or simple. What goes on behind the scenes is a lot of back-and-forth conversations and the careful choosing of words. Working on the “Vickers’ Envy misstep” story, I realized two lessons: clarity is key, and don’t fudge the nuances.
Clarity is not just about good writing, but it’s also about getting the story right. In this case, Vickers had not invested directly in nickel nor had an equity stake in Envy, but they backed a receivable financing product offered by Envy instead. Saying otherwise doesn’t do justice to the source.
When so much discourse today is tainted by extremes, it’s easy to overlook the nuances of a conversation. Some VC firms may appear to have greater leeway than others, but that doesn’t imply any wrongdoing as long as everything that’s done is agreed between limited partners and the VC firm.
Sniffing out big stories and “making history” is what makes journalists good. Good journalists, as all should be, tell stories with impartiality.
