KPay unveils Tap to Pay on iPhone for Hong Kong merchants
KPay Group has launched Tap to Pay on iPhone for its merchants in Hong Kong, allowing them to accept in-person contactless payments using only an iPhone and the KPay iOS app.
KPay Group is a fintech firm offering financial management and business operations tools in Asia-Pacific.
The new feature supports contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, with no need for additional hardware.
The system uses NFC technology and also allows PIN entry, including accessibility features.
Apple does not store card numbers or transaction details on the device or its servers, except that in Store and Forward mode, encrypted card numbers may be temporarily stored on the iPhone.
The service is available to Hong Kong merchants using iPhone XS or later with the latest iOS.
KPay’s partner, Mastercard, said the move will help SMEs in Hong Kong adopt contactless payments.
Merchants may receive special offers on devices and data when signing up through certain payment platforms.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
KPay joins a crowded Tap to Pay on iPhone launch, not pioneering the feature
- KPay launches in Hong Kong alongside Adyen, a global payments processor; Global Payments, a merchant acquirer; and SoéPay, a Hong Kong payments provider 1.
- Apple launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in the US in February 2022 and later rolled it out to over 50 countries and regions, with Hong Kong joining later 1.
- Merchants need an iPhone XS or later with the latest iOS 2. That may slow uptake among small shops and sole proprietors who use older iPhones or Android devices.
Systems integrators can use TVP funding for eligible Tap to Pay on iPhone components
- Hong Kong’s Technology Voucher Programme (TVP) funds projects that raise productivity 3. It covers 75 percent up to HK$600,000, and Point of Sale (POS) systems are on the approved list 34.
- Device resellers and managed service providers (MSPs) can bundle Tap to Pay setup with eligible hardware or software when needed 5. The technology piece qualifies for 3 to 1 TVP matching, so every HK$1 from the applicant brings HK$3 from TVP 5.
- Applicants must put in at least 25 percent in cash 3. After approval, TVP releases an initial 25 percent, which helps systems integrators set phased terms that lower upfront costs for Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) merchants 3.
