Korea’s Netmarble acquires Hong Kong casino game firm for $2.2b

“Online game developer Netmarble has agreed to acquire Hong Kong-based casino game company SpinX Games for US$2.2 billion, in what is being described as the biggest overseas merger and acquisition deal by a South Korean game company,” Nikkei Asia reported.

Details:

  • The move would diversify Netmarble’s portfolio, which is already one of the biggest online gaming firms in Korea.
  • Netmarble’s co-CEO Lee Seung-won said the deal would allow Netmarble to add the social casino genre to its collection of titles in the role-playing game space.

Dive deeper:

  • Based on sales, SpinX ranked third in the global mobile social casino space in the second quarter of the year, according to Netmarble.
  • The deal could help the South Korean firm better compete with its local rivals NCSoft, Nexon, and Krafton in the country’s gaming market, which is expected to grow to over US$17 billion by 2022.
