China’s taxi app market breaks 150 million users, and it’s totally dominated by two apps

China’s taxi app market may still be fairly new and increasingly attracting regulatory scrutiny, but that doesn’t mean it’s small. According to a recent report from Chinese data-tracking firm Analysis International, the market broke the 150 million user barrier, hitting 154 million users during Q3 of this year. And who’s benefiting from that growing user base? Almost exclusively two companies: Kuaidi Dache and Didi Dache:

That shouldn’t come as a big surprise, given that both companies are among China’s 15 most valuable startups, and valued at over US$1 billion. Both also offer pretty impressive coverage, with Kuaidi Dache currently in 358 Chinese cities and Didi Dache operating in 300.

Q3’s climbing user numbers are certainly good news for Kuaidi Dache and Didi Dache, but they may not be good news for China’s broader taxi app marketplace. With those two apps dominating more than 99 percent of the market, the window of opportunity for other taxi-focused startups may be closing fast, if it hasn’t slammed shut already.
