After the Japan women’s football team beat America in penalties early this morning, there was no shortage of congratulations and from fans in the US and around the world. “Congrats Japan” was trending on Twitter, but regrettably so were a few other unfortunate phrases.
Both ‘Japs’ and ‘Pearl Harbor’ also made it to the list of trending topics, as what I can only assume are long-time American soccer supporters struggling to contain their disappointment. Take @KReez_Mac for example, who might want to consider switching off his geolocation before making hateful remarks. Or Starbucks employee @v_free_28, who I expect is probably not speaking on behalf of his company.
While every country has its share of morons, it is disappointing to see that there were enough to drive such remarks to the trending topics list. Over on Japan Probe, we can see that the situation on Facebook is not much better.
Elsewhere on Twitter, I found this picture making the rounds showing US president Barack Obama and family watching the game. While I’m certain they were disappointed with the outcome, it was nice to see Obama’s congratulations as well as those from other grown-up Americans.
