Japan’s most popular developer is exactly who you’d think it is

Nintendo is hemorraghing money, having lost $92.7 million in its first quarter. But it’s still the most popular developer in Japan, with 41.1 percent of Japanese professionals claiming loyalty to the house that built Mario, Link, and countless other iconic franchises.

In an online poll conducted by MyNavi Student, 500 male and female Japanese professionals were asked if they played video games for enjoyment. 138 replied in the affirmative. Out of these, 52.9 percent or 73 people had a particular developer that they liked. From these, 30 were fans of Nintendo over all others.

Coming in at number two was Square Enix with 24.7 percent. Capcom placed third with 8.2 percent. No surprises there. But what was surprising was the lack of love for Sega, and Bandai Namco with 1 vote each.

This poll is probably not representative of the state of the Japan market, which is at a stage where mobile games account for half of the games industry overall with Puzzle & Dragons being one of the most popular mobile games. Meanwhile, Nintendo has been quite averse to mobile. The reason for Nintendo coming up on top could possibly be due to the fact that Gungho Online (the developer of Puzzle & Dragons) doesn’t have as much nostalgia or history attached to it.

Who is your favorite Japanese developer? Or do you play games based on content rather than country of origin? Let us know in the comments.
