New Statistics Show Blogs are Big in Japan

ComScore is reporting some interesting numbers about which countries in the world spend the most time on blogs. With an average visitor spending 62.6 minutes on blogs for the month of June, Japan tops all nations in engagement.

What blogging services are Japanese users reading? Here’s a graphical overview of comScore’s breakdown (see right). Surprisingly FC2 tops comScore’s list, though it’s technically a Nevada-based company, but offers a number of web services to Japan. After that, we see Livedoor and Ameblo as the next two big players.

As shown in the chart, traffic to blogs is on the rise in 2011 in Japan, with a couple of services making significant strides when compared to their position last year. Most notably Seesaw and Blogger put up 58 and 52 percent traffic increases respectively.

The president of comScore Japan KK, Daizo Nishitani, elaborated on the role of blogs in Japan’s internet culture:

Blogging has historically been a popular Internet activity, as the opportunity to interact anonymously appealed to many online users. Beyond the wide reach of the blog category in Japan, visitors are also highly engaged on these sites – spending more time on blogs per month than any other country globally.

Japan-Blogs_June-2011How much time do other countries spend on blogs? Japan’s Asian neighbor South Korea ranks second with visitors spending almost 49.6 minutes in the month.

They’re followed by Poland at 47.7 minutes, while Indonesia (33.1) and Brazil (32.5) rounded out the top five.
