Hello readers,
When we talk about startup funding in Southeast Asia, independent venture firms tend to take the spotlight. But there’s another kind of investor that doesn’t get as much attention: corporations.
Corporations are deeply embedded within the region’s startup scene, and corporate VC firms have made significant investments into the region’s up-and-coming businesses. Check out the full article here or scroll down for a quick summary.
But first, your quick bytes for today:
1️⃣ More question marks around TikTok’s sale
Parent firm ByteDance has said that it will “strictly follow” the Chinese government’s new export-control regulations. The updated rules, which require companies to receive government approval before exporting AI technologies, have added another layer of complexity to TikTok’s sale in the US.
2️⃣ Tokopedia rolls out fintech service amid data security concerns
The Indonesian ecommerce unicorn has launched Dhanapala, a stand-alone peer-to-peer lending platform.
This comes as Tokopedia and Indonesian authorities are investigating a security leak that exposed the personal information of up to 91 million of the company’s users. The breach was discovered in May, when the data of 15 million of those users was published online.
3️⃣ Watch for free – on Netflix
The US streaming powerhouse has made select Netflix Original movies and TV shows available to non-paying subscribers across all the markets it operates in. This is not the first time that the company has experimented with making titles free for non-subscribers, as it explores different promotions to attract new users.
4️⃣ Paytm denies data breach
A report by US-based research firm Cyble found that the ecommerce arm of Indian fintech company Paytm has suffered a data breach. Paytm denies this claim, saying that its user data is secure.
