iTwin is a reinvented form of thumbdrive that allows file secure, wireless local file-sharing between two computers without any cables. It’s like Dropbox, just that files aren’t shared in the cloud. Instead, they’re shared from PC to PC. When we last featured it on PO six months ago, iTwin was only available to Windows users – but full Mac support has been rolled out today.
Akash Nemani at iTwin, informed me that the Singapore-based start-up has just taken its long overdue Mac version out of beta, and is today ready for primetime. It only works for OS X Lion and Snow Leopard, though. So tough luck for Leopard or Tiger users.
For existing iTwin Windows users, you can install a free OS X compatibility software to ensure that your current iTwin works perfectly on your Mac.
This is an important step forward for iTwin, as wireless (and cloudless) file sharing is now seamless from computer to computer regardless of whether it is a Mac or Windows. A Mac version was sorely needed – imagine not being able to sync files on Dropbox just because your friend is on a Mac.
While iTwin looks awesome, I wonder how many devices were sold so far. As we all know, managing a hardware-oriented start-up, as compared to a web-based start-up, involves a lot of extra costs. The folks at iTwins are pretty tight-lipped about costs when we asked them. Anyway, enjoy your cross-platform filesharing, iTwin users.
