China’s ministry of transport has criticized several domestic ride-hailing platforms over safety violations, Technode reported.
Among the 11 platforms named were Tencent-backed Meituan, Alibaba’s Amap, and SoftBank-backed Didi. Some of the outlined violations include recruiting unlicensed drivers as well as other illegal operations.
The ministry has also demanded platforms to share responsibility with driver-partners should any accidents occur, with the priority being to pay for any losses sustained by passengers.
The development marks another blow to Didi, which was recently fined US$1.2 billion by Chinese authorities for violating data security laws. Alibaba and Meituan had also borne the brunt of the antitrust fines issued by Chinese authorities in 2021, with the two firms shelling out a combined US$3.2 billion.
