Indonesia’s Telkomsel Adds Value for Customers with Content Partnerships

TelkomselOne of the largest telecommunication companies in Indonesia, Telkomsel, is cooperating with about 500 companies to provide additional content services to add value for its customers. The partnerships will represent about 7% of the company’s total revenue.

The company will implement social features like a free Facebook service, Twitter via SMS, Google Business Connect, Yahoo Koprol, and Opera Mini & Chat packages for its customers. These services are all very popular among young users, the biggest market for SIM cards in the nation.

The telco’s president director Sarwoto Atmosutarno pointed out that “Currently Telkomsel has provided more than 70 types of Value Added Service (VAS) based on applications, contents, SMS, and others.”

Religious content is key

The most popular of Telkomsel’s content services are music, entertainment, and religious contents. Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, and Islamic content on Telkomsel now enjoys over 30 million subscribers. Other operators are also racing to provide religious content, as we recently saw when rival XL launched its Hauraa SIM card.

Competition between telcos in Indonesia has forced each operator to be more creative in providing valuable services for customers. It’s not just about cheap rates, but they also need to make infrastructure improvements and develop compelling content to win over more subscribers.

Here’s an example of one of the company’s promotional ads where the company has enlisted a number of celebrities. This particular ad is for a SIM card program, just one of many campaigns to bring in more customers.
