India’s open ecommerce network expands into mobility

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), India’s flagship initiative that aims to democratize digital commerce in the country, has now made inroads into the mobility sector.

It will now allow customers to book rides from several mobility apps via a single platform. It will also integrate multiple modes of transportation such as metros, auto rickshaws, and buses into a single portal.

T Koshy, CEO of ONDC, said in a statement that the open mobility network on ONDC “provides equal opportunities to mobility players of all sizes and between existing and new players.”

Namma Yatri, an auto rickshaw-booking app built by Juspay Technologies, is the first mobility app to become part of ONDC’s open network for mobility initiative.

ONDC intends to do for digital commerce what the unified payments interface (UPI) did for payments in India. UPI is a government-supported project that integrates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application.

The initiative aims to counter the monopoly of global giants in sectors such as ecommerce, mobility, grocery, food order and delivery, hotel booking, and travel. Interestingly, dominant companies like Amazon have also joined ONDC.
