The Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament has started and statistics have shown that more are watching the cricket games online. Online viewership has increased by 82 percent in the first 15 days of the tournament, according to Indiatimes, which is also the key organizer that partners with YouTube to bring the games online.
11 million page views and 20 million video views were recorded in the first 15 days of the tournament, signaling a strong growth in online viewership. The YouTube channel which airs the cricket games also includes highlights and interviews with coaches and players.
Videos are usually uploaded in the morning to catch cricket fans early (just like how news networks work). Plus, users can also watch these videos at no cost and whenever they want to. The only pain, however, is the occasional ads that play at the start of the video.
IndiaTimes and YouTube have presented an interesting business model to monetize sports content. While we don’t know how much revenue it brings for now, it is at least a good attempt to move content online.
As more Indians join the online world, it also means more viewerships and eventually revenue. It seems like IndiaTimes has positioned itself well in the growing Internet market in India.
India, the second most populous country in the world at 1.15 billion currently has about 100 million internet users.
