Indian online teaching app banks $20m in pre-series B round

Teachmint, an India-based platform for live teaching, has raised US$20 million in its latest round, marking its fourth round of investments within 12 months of its launch.

  • Teachmint, which was launched in May last year, will use the funds to further develop its technology, fuel its expansion into newer markets, and make new hires.
  • Its CEO and co-founder Mihir Gupta said that Teachmint’s platform has seen a 25x growth in usage over the last quarter and is on track to become the largest live teaching platform worldwide, excluding China.
  • On the heels of hitting these milestones, the startup launched Teachmint for Institute, a platform for educational institutions to conduct and monitor online classes.
  • Another Indian edtech firm that’s looking to grow its presence outside the country is upGrad, which had about 1 million learners in over 50 countries on its platform as of April this year. (Read: Indian edtech startup hopes to shake up lifelong learning in Southeast Asia)
  • UpGrad announced yesterday that it set aside US$250 million for mergers and acquisitions that it plans to make over the next seven to nine months. It will focus on short-form learning startups and tap potential markets such as Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
