Alibaba’s music-streaming platform to reportedly shut down in January 2021

“On November 29, a post on Sina Weibo, China’s largest microblogging platform, claimed that Alibaba’s music-streaming platform Xiami Music is going to close down permanently in January 2021,” Pandaily reported.
The author of the post is reportedly Xiang Zheng, the marketing director of US music corporation Universal Music.

A Weibo tabloid news account added that Xiami’s marketing directors were meeting in Beijing to discuss the closure and that an announcement will be made after they return to their headquarters in Hangzhou.

The company, however, has not issued a clarification or made an official announcement despite the circulating rumors.

Xiami Music did not respond to queries sent by Tech in Asia regarding the matter.

The music-streaming platform was acquired by the Alibaba Group in 2013 and has access to all of its resources, including the latest technology and music entertainment insights across the tech giant’s various platforms.

This includes Alibaba’s online shopping platform Taobao, online retail firm Tmall, payments brand Alipay, and streaming service Youku, among others.

Though it has 14.4 million monthly active users, Xiami Music remains the smallest among China’s top five music-streaming platforms – Tencent’s QQ Music, KuGou Music, KuWo, and NetEase Cloud Music.
