Indian chip startup BigEndian raises $6m
Bengaluru fabless chip startup BigEndian Semiconductors said on May 6 it raised US$6 million in a round led by IAN Alpha Fund to commercialize its first system-on-chip and expand engineering.
Vertex Ventures SEA and India, IvyCap Ventures, and angel investors also joined the round.
The funding follows the tape-out of its first commercial chip and comes as India pushes for more locally designed technology in sensitive infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
BigEndian goes after secure surveillance chips in a crowded market
- BigEndian’s first chip is aimed at enterprise and consumer surveillance cameras. The team includes engineers from Arm, Intel, and Broadcom 1.
- The company says security is built in from the start. It wants its silicon, the hardware inside electronic devices, to be a trusted option for sensitive uses 2.
- The startup will face Ambarella, a chip designer for video and imaging processors. Its CV7 edge AI vision system-on-chip is made on Samsung’s 4-nanometer process. It can handle several video streams at once up to 8Kp60, or 8K video at 60 frames per second 3.
India-made surveillance chips fit a wider push for local tech
- The funding follows a wider geopolitical shift. Investors see room in changing electronics supply chains to back local semiconductor industries 1.
- BigEndian’s plan for India-made surveillance chips fits India’s push for more homegrown technology in sensitive infrastructure 2.
- The harder task comes after chip design. Local device makers still need to build power-efficient products around it. That matters in edge AI, where data is processed on or near a device instead of in distant data centers to cut data movement 4.
