In brief: India cautions global ecommerce players such as Amazon, Flipkart over discounts
- India has warned Amazon, Walmart’s Flipkart, and other international ecommerce firms that they must comply with new foreign investment rules that would limit them from giving out steep discounts, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
- Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the government is committed to protecting smaller players from predatory pricing by foreign-funded companies, but is still willing to listen to comments on its new foreign direct investment rules.
- Goyal’s statement comes as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to visit New Delhi this week amid increased trade tensions between the two countries.
