Facebook once again proved to be the top social network in India. It isn’t just in terms of users, but also in terms of receiving and sharing breaking news. During the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster, Facebook became a default destination for users to learn and spread news in India.
People prefer reading streams of status updates instead of TV and newspaper. Plus, Facebook’s ‘share’ and ‘like’ features made content more viral than ever.
“Facebook is aiding in organizing news around people. More than 43% of the news sharing happens through the social media and not through TV or newspaper. The homepage of the Facebook is a personalized newspaper. It is about people that matter to you,” said Kirthiga Reddy, director of Online Operations and India Head of Facebook.
Facebook is also the top 3 website in India, with 40% of India’s Internet population in the network. Growth is robust too: Facebook has added around 5 million users in last 3 months.
